So here we are at the beginning of another year - another year of Project 365. What better place to start than at the very beginning. This was what it looked like in the Leonard household at midnight. As everyone in our time zone was sending 2012 packing and ushering in a brand new year, this is what was happening in our little slice of the world.
The "party" had started with dinner out, a movie at home, and the wait for midnight that all three kids were determined to make it to. Let me back up here a bit...My Wonderful Husband and I have never been big New Year's Eve people... Well, there was the year that I went to Times Square - yes I did - it was cold and icy, there was no where to use a bathroom, we "lost" two friends when they roped off the street after they went in search of 1994 glasses, you could not see the ball drop, you could not hear any of the musical acts you see on TV, and did I mention it was COLD? But I was there and I can always say I did it - cross that one off of the bucket list. But in all of the years that I have shared my new year's with My Wonderful Husband, we have never really had big plans - sometimes dinner, sometimes drinks, sometimes parties at friend's houses, sometimes with family....but when we had our kids we felt justified to say - "No thanks - we are staying home. As a matter of fact, we are stinkin' tired and we will see the new year in the morning." Lame? Maybe, but true. Then last year, the kids decided that they wanted to stay up to see the ball drop and since they now know how to tell time, we couldn't "simulate the new year" at 8pm and call it a night. We had to buck up and try to stay awake. Last year, The Princess gave up and went to bed, The Boy went to bed and then staggered back down the stairs at 11:57, and only The Bear stayed up - eyes propped open... This year, they were once again determined and My Wonderful Husband and I were once again more concerned with our ability to stay up hours past our own bedtimes. But for our children, we gave it the old college try - well I did at least.. ;-) The wait was getting difficult for The Princess but she got a second wind with some good tunes on Rockin' Eve (even if they had no idea who MC Hammer was - they enjoyed the show) But eventually even good music couldn't sustain everyone.. When the ball dropped in Times Square, this is what it looked like here - The Princess had passed out on a chair, My Wonderful Husband was sacked out on the couch, The Boy lasted until about 11:40 before falling into such a deep sleep we had to carry him up to bed after midnight, The Pooch was sound asleep, and it was just The Bear and I counting down the seconds to the new year. But I wouldn't trade a single thing. My mother use to always say whatever you are doing on New Year's and whoever you are with will speak for your whole year. I could not think of better people to have spent my New Year's with and I can only hope that the peace and love that was felt in this house as 2013 opened it's doors is felt the whole year through.
