P365 - 2016 - Day 166 - knees
Years ago, My Wonderful Husband had several knee surgeries - he has two pins in one knee, cadaver parts, and no cartilage. That being said, he has never let it slow him down and he has the highest pain threshold of anyone that I know. I know this to be true even more than I did before because today we went to the orthopedic and looked at the xray of his one knee to see that he was completely bone on bone. The doctor described his knee as being that of a 70 year old. A knee replacement is in his future....hopefully distant future... His other knee recently started bothering him as well and today he had fluid drained from his "good knee" and cortisone shots in both knees. He is scheduled to have gel injections in his "70 year old knee" to help with cushioning, the doctor will monitor the "good knee" because he is concerned there is a meniscus tear, and he will do some rehab for both knees. We asked about soccer, surfing, and running....he isn't willing to give it all up - he needs to be active and enjoys all of those activities. Plus, remember high pain threshold, competitive nature, and a lifelong athlete. The doctor, sensing that he was not going to convince him to become a couch potato, said he should do less of the higher impact activities and try more lower impact ones like biking and swimming. I don't see him surfing less, giving up soccer, or not running at all. Instead, he is considering adding some cross training with biking and swimming. :-)
